KPop and me – TVXQ

Critique about their new offering – Something.
image

I’m okay with the music. It’s a jazzed piece that harken back to the big band era of American thirties.
image

It also has a N’awlins Big Easy feel with the trumpets and Cellos and saxophones.
BUT! Is Kpop ready for jazz music?
image

And the words are supposed to be “She’s got THAT something…” but the two boys are swallowing that last T and all I keep hearing is “She’s got the something…” It still sort of makes sense. Until you get the translated version. Then the words of the song do not focus on telling you what that “Something” is. It becomes two boys talking about the kind of men they are and how they act towards girls who approach them. I’m still waiting for them to tell me what the hell that something is! And while the music was unique like this, I couldn’t help but note that I wanted to sing EXO’s Growl along with it. As if the tone and intonation without the instruments were basically the same. It was a telling moment when right after “She’s got the something…” “…nae eurorong, eurorong, eurorong dae…” seems to make perfect sense. It means that EXO could have sung this song and be okay. It means that SM isn’t thinking about the individual color of their bands and groups anymore. That’s disappointing.

Then, because why not, right? Let’s see what hidden messages were placed in the video. The huge “X marks the spot” on the floor.
image

Obviously, that’s a reference to their 10 years in the business. The dual staircase though, while grand, seems to refer to two coming together and meeting at the same point, that huge X. The next thing that caught my eyes were the ropes.
image

Are the boys trying to say something? Like they feel like they’re tied up and feel like puppets controlled by so many people who make it seem like they are holding them up, but really restricting their movements? Hmmm. Bears thinking about, right?

Then there are that tattoos. Someone else pointed it out on another blog, but I couldn’t tell you more which of the many I read it came from.

Yunho also has them. But Jaejoong also had them. For Just Another Girl.
image

image

Are the two trying to copy the concept? Because Jaejoong went with the Japanese rock feel, they went towards Jazzed Big Band feel. Including tattoos on their necks and hands. Interesting. I don’t think this will go over very well, but nice try.

However, for those praying for a return of the five as a whole… Perhaps this video gives a hint of things to come. Let me show you.
image

They pass this panel of three muses on their way into the jazz club. Note that there are three muses. There are only two men in TVXQ. Two women would have been fine, right? The muses’ eyes follow them in. Then on their way out..
image

image

The muse in the middle beckons… Who do you think that muse equates to? Or at least, who I think she represents? How about this?
image

image

Seems almost like the wall panel, huh? The last shot is the one that made me laugh and smile. I hope it is a foreboding of things to come.

I would really like for that to happen.

Note: I do not own any of these images. They all came from various places on the Internet. The opinion and speculations are mine, though.

  1. I really like your way of viewing things especially the last five-again thought <3_<3 thank you. I enjoyed reading your critique.

      • I think the things will depend on Jae and YH and I hope that TVXQ2 comes to JYJ, not vice versa. When, how and in what way, we’ll see. Maybe after the army services? We can only hope.

      • Yes, it seems they are slowly paving the way to this point. Yunho actually answering a question about Jae, Jae GUSHING, though he probably regrets that now… And Yuchunnie wishing for them to drink together all five of them. Those were official statements. Most are from JYJ. Nothing has been said from the SM camp. Thanks for commenting, Danny.
